π What is Aerobic Decoupling?
Aerobic Decoupling measures how much your heart rate increases ("drifts") over time while maintaining the same power output. A decoupling value under 5% indicates that your aerobic system is highly developed and stable. A value above 10% suggests cardiac drift, indicating fatigue or that the intensity was beyond your current base fitness.
Calculation: The ride is split into two halves. For each half, Efficiency Factor (EF) is computed as: Avg Power / Avg Heart Rate.

π What is Variability Index (VI)?
Variability Index (VI) is the ratio of Normalized (Weighted) Power to Average Power. Steady-state rides (like triathlons or flat time trials) should have a VI close to 1.00 to 1.05. Rolling hills or punchy group rides will show a higher VI (e.g. 1.10 to 1.20+), which places a higher anaerobic cost on your body.
Calculation: VI = Weighted Average Power / Average Power
β‘ What is Avg Efficiency Factor (EF)?
Efficiency Factor (EF) measures how much mechanical power (Watts) you can produce for every heartbeat. A higher EF indicates a more efficient aerobic fitness level.
Calculation: EF = Average Power (Watts) / Average Heart Rate (bpm)
π― What are Heart Rate Zones?
Heart rate zones represent different physiological systems. The zones shown in the power-to-zone curve are fetched directly from your custom Strava athlete zones. If these are not configured, fallback zones are calculated using an estimated global maximum heart rate based on all synced history averages.
Fallback Zones (Coggan Heart Rate Zones):
- Recovery: < 60% Max HR
- Endurance: 60% - 70% Max HR
- Tempo: 70% - 80% Max HR
- Threshold: 80% - 90% Max HR
- Anaerobic/VO2: > 90% Max HR
